As the office of the Minister-President, the State Chancellery is the seat of the state government. This is where the Minister-President carries out her Cabinet and official affairs. The head of the office is the Head of the State Chancellery holds the rank of a secretary of state.
The State Chancellery implements the policies and plans of the Minister-President and coordinates the various ministries. It supports the Minister-President in state affairs and representative functions, for example with regard to protocol-related and consular matters, as well as with regard to matters of decorations and clemency.

Furthermore, the State Chancellery, together with the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs and the state representation in Berlin, is responsible for the relations of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with the Federal Government (Bundesregierung), the Federal German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) and the Federal Council (Bundesrat) as well as with other federal states. The State Chancellery prepares the Conference of Minister-Presidents and the voting behaviour of the state in the Federal Council (Bundesrat).
The Parliamentary State Secretary for Vorpommern and Eastern Mecklenburg, headquartered in Anklam, is also organisationally assigned to the State Chancellery.
The state's regional partnerships, foreign trade and trade fairs, as well as the administration of EU structural funds, are further fields of work that fall under the State Chancellery's remit. The State Chancellery also coordinates the press and public relations work of the state government.
