The Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Sports of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Sports Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located in the historic Marstall stables, a neoclassical building close to Schwerin Castle. The Ministry is divided into four departments: the general area with staff and budget, youth, families and sport, social affairs and integration and also health. The State government’s integration officer is also assigned to this ministry.

Youth, Families and Sport Department

It is important for children, adolescents and their families to feel happy in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For this reason, the State works with players at various levels at designing and further developing positive living and experiential spaces. The department’s responsibilities cover many areas of life– from the desire to have children to giving birth, child protection and youth welfare. With each step, families experience new life phases with constant new challenges. The Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Sports provides a stable, reliable framework within a sustainable State family policy.

This includes family-oriented measures and needs-oriented counselling services. One example of this is the early support offered to pregnant women and fathers-to-be and mothers and fathers with children aged up to three years. Families in challenging life situations can also rely on help from family midwives and additional family health and child nurses. Trained specialist staff are available to support people via a special State programme.

A further example is the consultation, information and educational work in the field of equality for sexual and gender diversity. The Ministry co-ordinates enquiries and tasks with regard to LSBTI* matters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern within the State government and is following important steps at a federal level such as the introduction of marriage for all and the introduction of the third gender category in civil status legislation.

In addition, the Ministry provides administrative districts and independent towns with European Social Fund (ESF) finance to support boys and girls with an increased need for assistance with social educational work provided by youth and school social work services.

Sport is also affiliated to the department. Sport is a major component of social life in MV. It not only contributes to a healthy lifestyle but also positively affects social interaction. We want as many people as possible to be able to do sport regardless of their social background and according to their interests and skills. The Ministry promotes sport in its various forms, encourages leisure , mass, competitive and top-class sport and supports the construction of sports facilities.

Department for Social Affairs and Integration

One of the biggest challenges in the social sector is to do justice to the demands of a constantly ageing population with regard to the structure of facilities. In addition to promoting the active participation of the elderly, guaranteeing good care is a central issue in this department. We seek to offer a balanced mix of professional, familial and voluntary structure and help. The development of residential care and the further strengthening of house, outpatient and semi-residential care are important aims. We are campaigning for a care reform and relief for persons in need of care and their relatives.

Apart from this, the Ministry promotes the involvement of people in the State. We support people who volunteer and acknowledge civic commitment. One example is of this is the new EhrenamtsKarte MV card. This bonus card for the socially committed offers volunteers discounts on shopping and entrance fees.

State policy places a special focus on the topic of integration. Especially networking and information work has been strengthened since the establishment of the new post of the State government’s integration officer in 2016. Many offerings such as the language mediation network or the portal at www.willkommeninmv.de are successfully established. The main focus of the State integration officer’s work currently lies in pooling help for refugees from Ukraine.

Health Department

The Health Department works actively on shaping the further development of the healthcare sector and future-oriented healthcare. Tasks include the hospital sector, rehabilitation, health promotion and prevention, psychiatry and involuntary treatment, healthcare law, infection protection, medicines and healthcare products, emergency services and health insurance and public healthcare services matters. One major health policy focus is strengthening prevention. Combatting alcohol and drug abuse as well as the protection of non-smokers and cancer screening are important topics.

Combatting and containing the Corona pandemic was and of course still is a central aspect of the work of this department.
