The importance of European institutions is often underestimated by many people. Today more decisions than ever before are being made in Brussels, which affect the citizens of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Experts even refer to this phenomenon as "European domestic policy".Notably, the 2024 European Parliament elections saw a significant increase in voter turnout, with 65.5% of eligible voters participating..
Both the Federal Government and the Federal States are actively involved in shaping EU policies: Article 23 of the Constitution ensures that the Federal States play a key role in European policy areas that infringe upon their competencies. In order to represent and safeguard the state’s interests, information on and evaluation of European projects are required at an early stage. For this reason, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern established its office in Brussels in 1991.
