The Ministry of Justice, Gender Equality and Consumer Protection is responsible for all constitutional and specific legal questions, law enforcement and social services of the justice system and the judicial review system. The Ministry’s further responsibilities gender equality, consumer protection, standard testing, rehabilitation and compensation in the area of injustice administered in the former German Democratic Republic and supervision of charitable foundations. The Ministry of Justice is also involved in legislative projects at State and Federal level.

The Ministry of Justice’s area of operations extends across district and regional courts, the Higher Regional Court, the administrative courts, industrial courts, social courts, the Finance Court, the public prosecutors, the prisons to the social services of the justice system.

The Ministry of Justice, Gender Equality and Consumer Protection is responsible for the supervision of the State’s public prosecutors’ offices. There are, however. limits. Due to the independence of judges guaranteed under constitutional law and functional independence in the administration of justice the Ministry cannot issue orders to the courts in factual issues. Court decisions can only be reviewed via the routes regulated by the codes of procedure.
