1980 - 1985: Degree at the University of Rostock, qualification as a graduate agricultural engineer specialising in plant production
1980 - 1990: Head of department in the Lübtheen agricultural co-operative (LPG)
1990: Member of the first freely elected People’s Chamber of the GDR
1990: Founding member of the SPD in Amt Neuhaus (Hagenow District), member of the SPD since this time
1990 - 1994: Member of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Parliament, chair of the agriculture committee from 1992
1994 - 1998: Member of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State parliament, chair of the agriculture and nature conservation committee
