Cooperation with Poland is centred on the partnerships with the voivodships of West Pomerania (Stettin) and Pomerania (Gdansk). Hundreds of joint projects, firm links and networks characterize these relationships Mecklenburg-Vorpommern works in the committees of the German-Polish Government Commission on behalf of regional and cross-border cooperation, in the Oder-Partnership network and the German-Polish Media Days.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern agreed the most recent partnership in the Baltic Sea region with the Leningrad region of the Russian Federation in 2002. This area is an autonomous subject of the Russian Federation, independent of the city of St Petersburg.
In April 2000, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the President of the South-West Region of Finland met in Turku to sign a "Joint Declaration on Regional Cooperation" between the two regions.
Since 2013, regular contacts have existed with the northern provinces of the Netherlands, namely Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland.
Since October 2003, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has enjoyed a partnership with the French region of Poitou-Charentes.
On 19 January 1994, a partnership agreement was concluded between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (USA). There are historical links between the two regions.
