When it comes to foreign trade, the State Chancellery is the "one-stop shop" for the enterprises of the federal state (Cabinet Decree of 15 May 2012). The "Foreign Trade and Trade Fairs" Department in the State Chancellery coordinates the foreign activities of the state's specialised agencies, among others in the case of business delegation trips abroad that have political support.

The volume of foreign trade in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has steadily increased over recent years, reaching its highest value of €13.4bn in 2015. In 2016 there was a value of €12,6bn. The foreign trade balance closed with a surplus of €1.8bn in 2016 (previous year: €2.6bn). In 2016, the five most important foreign trade partners in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were the Netherlands (€1.2bn), Poland (€1.0bn) Denmark (€737m), Finland (€707m) and the Russian Federation (€642m).

The State Chancellery uses a variety of instruments to help companies open up new markets and to ensure that the successful export boom will continue.
