The volume of foreign trade in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reached the value of €18.3bn in 2024. The four most important foreign trade partners in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were the USA (€1.61bn), Poland (€1.59bn), the Netherlands (€1.46bn) and Denmark (1.26bn).

Meck­len­burg-Vor­pom­mern is in many ways linked to the Baltic Sea region. In addition to the well-known challenges the Russian attack on Ukraine has raised fundamental questions of security and a secure and sustainable energy supply. The state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern responded to these changes and adopted its strategy for cooperation with the democratic Baltic Sea region ("MV Baltic Sea Strategy").

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern maintains intensive partnerships with other coastal regions – first and foremost Poland and Finland. There are also regional partnerships with Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (USA), and with the Ukrainian Chernihiv Oblast.
